What the hypogeum is
The hypogeum is the underground level of the Colosseum. Listings describe a network of tunnels, cages and lifting machinery that brought gladiators and animals up to the arena.
Most visitors never see it. A standard ticket stays above ground, and an arena floor ticket puts you on the floor without going below it.
Not every area of the Colosseum is step-free, and the underground is a separate case. Read the accessibility guide before you book.
